OLDEST KNOWN PAINTING OF A GOLDEN RETRIEVER

The painting is signed "W.List". Wilhelm was a Austrian artist of that period. The canvas and stretcher bears the label of F. Weber & Company, which evolved from Scholz & Company in 1887. Weber, based in Philadelphia, is America's oldest art supply company. Frederick Weber, a German immigrant, was a friend to many German artist of that period. According to the company, it was not unusual for him to send supplies to them or for the artist to visit him while on trips to America. Much of the company's correspondence during that time was written in German.
The painting was purchased in 2003 from Freeman & Company of Philadelphia and then forwarded to members of The Golden Retriever Club (UK) for an historical assessment. It was restored and authenticated in 2004 by Olin Conservation. Charles Olin is the former head conservator for the National Museum of American Art and National Portrait Gallery. Photographs and transparencies were produced by Clifford Wheeler. It is printed by Old Town Editions on Hahnemuhle German etching paper using an IRIS press.
